Survey of Black Band Disease-affected scleractinian corals via drone-based observations in Okinawa, Japan
نویسندگان
چکیده
Diseases are a growing global threat to scleractinian corals. This study used relatively inexpensive commercial drone flown simultaneously along with reef walking/snorkeling confirm the presence of cyanobacterial Black Band Disease (BBD) on in subtropical Okinawa, Japan. At surveyed reef, corals included encrusting forms (12.57% ± 5.72 coverage), followed by massive/submassive (6.09% 4.05) and tabular (2.66% 1.19). Our survey is unique that research has not been previously applied BBD surveys, ground truthing. Thus, this can be regarded as an example using drones during coral disease assessments.

Epidemiology of Black Band Disease in Scleractinian Corals
Coral populations are declining rapidly worldwide; it has been estimated that over 80% of the coral cover in the Caribbean has been lost over the past three decades. Although diseases are a major cause for this decline, few have had their probable causes determined. Black band disease (BBD) is considered one of the most important contributors to the decline of coral reefs worldwide. BBD is char...
متن کاملBacterial community associated with black band disease in corals.
Black band disease (BBD) is a virulent polymicrobial disease primarily affecting massive-framework-building species of scleractinian corals. While it has been well established that the BBD bacterial mat is dominated by a cyanobacterium, the quantitative composition of the BBD bacterial mat community has not described previously. Terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysi...
متن کاملComparative Metagenomics of the Polymicrobial Black Band Disease of Corals
Black Band Disease (BBD), the destructive microbial consortium dominated by the cyanobacterium Roseofilum reptotaenium, affects corals worldwide. While the taxonomic composition of BBD consortia has been well-characterized, substantially less is known about its functional repertoire. We sequenced the metagenomes of Caribbean and Pacific black band mats and cultured Roseofilum and obtained five ...
متن کاملScleractinian Corals of Kuwait
A survey was made of the coral reefs of Kuwait to compile a species list of scleractinian corals. Twenty-eight hermatypic and six ahermatypic coral species are listed in systematic order, and a brief description is provided for each. A new species of Acropora is described. The Kuwait fauna is a small subset of the over 500 Indo-Pacific species. Several species show a higher degree of intraspeci...
متن کاملMicroplastic ingestion by scleractinian corals
Microplastics (i.e. plastic fragments <5 mm in diameter) are a widespread form of contamination in marine ecosystems around the globe (Moore 2008). Coastal ecosystems, such as inshore coral reefs, are likely to be particularly heavily impacted by microplastics because these contaminants often enter the marine environment through fragmentation of larger plastic items from terrestrial sources (Th...
